Minimal research is available on the prevalence and impact of complicated grief (CG) in military service members and veterans, despite high reported rates of loss in this population.

Service members and Veterans are at risk for complicated grief (i.e., having intense grief symptoms such as nonacceptance of the death and preoccupation about the deceased).

Objective: Research has identified non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) as a robust correlate of suicidal thoughts and behaviors; however, little is known regarding why these constructs may be related.

Often an individual has engaged in non-suicidal self-injury prior to a suicide attempt.
