Due to the increasing number of married servicemembers with children, the family court system is seeing more divorce and custody cases involving military parents and children.

The demands of military service, including the intensity and frequency of military operations, can have numerous effects on military families. Evidence suggests that spousal support may play an important role in the resiliency of military families.

Since 1973 excellent programs supporting military families have developed. However, a unified program across the Department of Defense (DoD) that meets family needs and connects to communities is elusive.

Custody and visitation cases involving military personnel bring a new level of complexity to an area which is already very difficult for judges. Several states have already taken action to provide tailored and specific protections for military families facing visitation and custody disputes.

Objective: This review discusses the current knowledge and future directions regarding obesity within the US military family (i.e., active-duty servicemembers, as well as military spouses, children, retirees, and veterans).

This article has three interrelated objectives designed to highlight military family studies in the context of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
