Anxiety Disorders in Childhood

Throughout childhood, fears and anxieties are common occurrences and are generally considered to be a component of normal development (Miller, Bar rett, & Hampe, 1974). Nevertheless, these reactions are often brought to the attention of professionals because of their severity and negative influence on the functioning of children and families. While the child who shrieks at the sight of a large snake at the city zoo may be quite acceptable, the child who refuses to go outdoors for fear of encountering a number of ferocious animals is another matter.
