Using Class Profiles to Teach Tolerance for Diverse Values in Family Relationships

Type
Summary

A classroom questionnaire study in a university family relationship course was used to assess students' sexual attitudes and behaviors. First, students were found to have slightly more conservative values for their own behaviors than for other people's behaviors, thus a dual value system did exist. Second, students showed a sharp difference in their attitudes toward premarital and extramarital sex. Third, class profiles were a useful way to help teach tolerance for other people's values by showing the diversity of values within individuals and between individuals, thus stimulating classroom discussion.
